Beacons

Film by Oliver Parkin & Alex Davis
“Now is the time of the Sea Gooseberries, they come and go with the tides bringing magic from the past and songs for our future.”

Beacons was the premiere of a new community adventure and live event, which took place across Folkestone, Hythe and Romney Marsh in November to December 2021. Through storytelling, music and light, it seeked to connect us to each other, our local landscape, and our place in the wider ecosystem, touching on themes of climate change and related migration.

It followed 200 Sea Gooseberries that washed ashore and became separated in the landscape, leaving fragments of their magical songs for people to find at 50 locations in shops, cafes, parks and open spaces. They needed to be reunited for their magic to work and for the story to be revealed.

The Quest took place from Sat 20 November - Sun 19 December 2021. The public joined us on a Quest across Folkestone, Hythe and Romney Marsh; to solve the clues and reunite the Sea Gooseberries. They were able to get a free map and join in The Quest to solve clues and find as many song fragments as they could, logging their finds on an interactive website - beaconsproject.uk. The more they found, the more chance there was for a Sea Gooseberry to ask to be looked after in their home, where it glowed brightly in their window until The Gathering.

The Gathering on Sunny Sands Beach, Folkestone was the finale of Beacons. The caretakers of the Sea Gooseberries and the wider public came together on Sunny Sands beach for a community gathering filled with light, song and fire to reunite these magical creatures and reveal the ending of the story.
