AR Boat research sets sail in Chatham

Imagine being able to witness a majestic creature flying over the Medway City Estate, or a rare plant sprouting out of Upnor Castle as you sail up the River Medway?

AR Boat is our exciting new R&D project using augmented reality on the water. And it’s a first for Medway.

The research project is currently underway. It is a partnership between SparkedEcho, Hi3 Network and Tiller and Wheel, with funding from Kent County Council.  It seeks to prototype and test the viability of a geolocated AR experience on a sailing boat that boards from Sun Pier in Chatham, with the potential to offer it as a future tourist attraction. Public engagement workshops to help create stories for the experience, will be delivered in partnership with Ideas Test.

A first version will be available for audiences to try out and feed back for a limited run during Electric Medway festival on 21/22 August 2022. Details of how to take part in the workshops or book a place will be announced soon.

The production team includes:
  • Kevin Grist, Artistic Director, SparkedEcho
  • Livi Wilmore, XR Artist
  • Dr. Chikeze Emile, Senior Lecturer of Games Design, Canterbury Christ Church University
  • Ed Gransden, Skipper and Director, Tiller and Wheel.
